Architectural Engineer

Sam is an architectural engineer. He has a bachelor's degree and is a qualified Professional Engineer. As well as working with architects to ensure that their designs are feasible and meet with local building codes and regulations, Sam works on his own designs for new buildings.

Sam spends a couple of hours in his office first thing, making calls and sending emails. He spends a lot of time communicating with clients, the local authorities who control construction activities, and colleagues in both engineering and construction. Sam has a couple of ongoing projects at the moment, one still in the design stages and the other already in construction.

The architect who is working on the new building design with Sam visits during the morning. They go over the architect's plans for the concert hall, and Sam points out a few refinements that need to be made in order to improve sound quality, according to the calculations he has made since their last meeting. They also discuss the structural stability of the building, and Sam reminds the architect about some of the regulations that they must adhere to.

Sam meets with a potential new client over lunch. They are looking for someone to design a new office building and are unsure whether they want to hire an architect or use an architectural engineer. Sam tells them about some of his previous projects and they discuss the sort of building that the client is looking for.

After returning to the office to make a few changes to the convert hall design, based on his discussions with the architect, Sam heads out to the construction site for his other project, an apartment building. He takes a tour of the site and sees that everything is going to plan.

Sam's job involves many different types of engineering since he is responsible for the design of whole buildings. It is the multidisciplinary nature of the work that attracted him to it, as well as the excitement of seeing one of his designs brought to life on the streets.
